Keeping a Holy Lent - 1

Weaving by Astrid Monique

Keeping a Holy Lent

The Way It Is

There's a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn't change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can't get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding.
You don't ever let go of the thread.

- by William Stafford

Lent is a time for naming
the "thread you follow..."

Most of us lead lives of many threads.
Some are stronger than others,
some are of our own making,
some are woven into the fabric of our being
with or without our permission...

The Spirit weaves
the thread of God's grace and design

into the cloth of our existence,
with or without our permission...

God's thread in our lives does not change:
strong and pliable, it hems and mends,
tucks and tailors
with or without our permission...

Lent is a time for naming the thread we follow
and the thread that follows us...

Lent is a time for noticing again
or discovering for the first time
that God's thread never lets go of us,
that we must never to let go of it...

I pray to notice and discover this-
to remember when it is so hard to think...

This is a great post and one that sums up a lot of what we fail to notice about the way The Holy Spirit works and weaves throughout our lives : as Jung would say, "God is always present whether invited or uninvited".

It has helped me reading this today as I have had a poor start to Lent- I was very unsettled yesterday,on Ash Wednesday and found it really hard to focus. This has grounded me a little.
