NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 8/18

I wrote this eight years ago and have posted it several times since, usually in August.  The prayer was inspired by this photo taken by a friend who's now with the Lord...

This summer, Lord, I pray I'll  find
just one gray speckled egg rock
- and one will be enough, Lord,
one will be enough...

I pray its smooth, cool surface bless my palms
some warm and sunny day
while my fingers weigh the story of how it came to be:
this mystery of confetti now embedded
in a stone rolled smooth by shifting tides
and polished on a sandy beach...

I pray my eyes and heart will open wide in awe
that such a gift should wash ashore
and land, by grace, by my bare feet...

I pray I'll wonder, as a child does,
how such treasure could be mine
to hold...  to own... to prize...
upon a shelf of summer's memories
in my soul...

I pray for just a day to hunt for rocks and shells
and sea glass frosted by the briny foam:
    all jewels and gemstones strewn
    by your own hand...

This summer, Lord, I pray I'll find
just one gray speckled egg rock
- and one will be enough, Lord,
just one will be enough...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake,
keep vigil while I sleep
that awake, I keep the watch with you
and sleep the night in peace...

Amen.

I couldn't find any "egg rock hymns" so I'm going with Christopher Walker's lullaby rendition of Psalm 131...

Like a child rests in its mother's arms,
so will I rest in you.
Like a child rests in its mother's arms,
so will I rest in you.

My God, I am not proud.
I do not look for things too great.

My God, I trust in you.
You care for me, you give me peace.

O Israel, trust in God;
now and always trust in God.
