Pentecost Novena - Day 9

Scripture of the day...

Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved,
the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper
and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?”
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”
Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?
You follow me.”
So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.
But Jesus had not told him that he would not die,
just “What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?”

It is this disciple who testifies to these things
and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.
There are also many other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be described individually,
I do not think the whole world would contain the books
that would be written.
John 21:20-25

For reflection: 
This is how John's gospel ends, with an acknowledgment that there was so much more to tell...  There is still so much more to tell of what Jesus has done and what Jesus is doing, in the power of the Spirit, to this very day.  John was a witness - and we are witnesses, too.  How is the Spirit moving each of us to tell what Jesus is doing in our lives, to share the truth of our own testimony?


Today's Intention

Let us pray today for those who seek to know and do God's will...
May the Holy Spirit empower us with wisdom, knowledge and truth that we might discern God's will in our lives.  May the same Spirit give us the courage and humility we need to do God's will rather than our own.  May the Spirit conform our minds and hearts to the Word of Christ and the desires of his heart.

Come, Holy Spirit,

once more fill my heart

with the fire and power of your gifts.

Come, Holy Spirit,

fill up wisdom's lamp,

come enlighten my mind and my will.

Come, Holy Spirit,

light the way: help me see and embrace

all that God has revealed.

brand my mind and my heart with God's Word.

my beacon of counsel

for judgments both prudent and pure.

Come, Holy Spirit

and kindle my courage

to do what is right, what is just.

Scripture of the day...

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them,
he said to Simon Peter,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
He said to him the third time,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
“Do you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

John 21:15-19

For reflection: Imagine Peter's dismay and distress when the Lord had to ask three times, "Do you love me?"  The Lord asks us, too, if we love him...  Does the love we profess so easily, match our care for his flock all around us?  The Spirit moves us to love the Lord in one another. Where, today, are  his lambs waiting for us to feed them? his sheep waiting for us to tend them?


Today's Intention

Let us pray today for those who struggle in their faith...
May the Holy Spirit strengthen the faith of those who doubt, deepen the faith of those who have lost trust and refresh the faith of those who have wandered from it.  May the same Spirit bind us, brothers and sisters in Christ, in the faith that gives us life and hope.

Scripture of the day...

Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:
“I pray not only for these,
but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
so that they may all be one,
as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me.

John 17:20-25

For reflection: As the Lord prayed for his disciples then, he prays for us now.  It's the Lord's intention, his desire, that many will come to believe through our word: through your word and mine. And it's his plan, his desire, that through hearing our word, all will come to be one in Christ and in the Father...  What word do we speak to others? Is it the Lord's word?  What word of faith do we live for others?  What word of unity draws others to us, to Christ, to the Father, to union with God in the Spirit?


Today's Intention

Let us pray today for our elder brothers and sisters...
May the Holy Spirit restore to their souls the joy of their youth.  May the same Spirit refresh their faith and their trust, especially when they are troubled, anxious and alone.  May the Spirit who makes us one renew us all, young and old, as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Scripture of the day...

And now I commend you to God
and to that gracious word of his that can build you up
and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.
I have never wanted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
You know well that these very hands
have served my needs and my companions.
In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort
we must help the weak,
and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said,
"It is more blessed to give than to receive."
Acts 20:28-38

For reflection:  What in my life need building up?  How is the grace of  God working to build me up?  What gracious word of God seeks to root itself in my heart?  How might I welcome the Holy Spirit's working in shaping and nurturing the person God calls me to be?  


Today's Intention

Let us pray today for the young...
May the Holy Spirit fill the hearts of our young people with faith and love and knowledge of God; may the same Spirit build up our youth into a new generation of Christ's body to serve the poor through the gospel of peace.

Scripture of the day...

“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world.
They belonged to you, and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.
Now they know that everything you gave me is from you,
because the words you gave to me I have given to them,
and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you,
and they have believed that you sent me.
I pray for them.
I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me,
because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours
and everything of yours is mine,
and I have been glorified in them.
And now I will no longer be in the world,
but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

John 17:1-11a

For reflection: Jesus is praying for his disciples here...  We are his disciples and he prays for us, too.  What might Jesus be praying for the Church these days?  What might he be praying today for me as an individual?  Might I ask the Holy Spirit to help me discern what Jesus asks of the Father for me?  What Jesus prays for the Church today?


Today's Intention

Let us pray today for those who make law and govern nations...
May the Holy Spirit speak God's truth in the minds and hearts of lawmakers everywhere.  May the Spirit shape and guide the decisions of those who govern nations and lead them to work for a harvest of justice and peace...

Scripture of the day...

The disciples said to Jesus,
“Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.
Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you.
Because of this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived
when each of you will be scattered to his own home
and you will leave me alone.
But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

John 16:29-33

For reflection: Where do I seek peace?  in the Lord?  in the world? in both? How do my troubles disturb my peace in the Lord?  How does my peace in the Lord give me strength in the trials I face?  Where do I find the courage to live in peace in difficult times? How might the Holy Spirit lead me to the peace I seek?

Let us pray today for those who minister in the Church...
May the Holy Spirit come with gifts of counsel, wisdom and courage for all who minster to God's people. May the same Spirit nurture in our ministers a piety that humbly reverences God's presence in his people.

For reflection:  How well do I know God?  How well do I know Jesus?  Do I work at deepening my knowledge of God and of his Son, Jesus? How might the Holy Spirit be drawing me to deepen my knowledge of the Lord? How might I be more open to the Spirit's work in me?

Let us pray today for those who have been abused...
May the Holy Spirit heal their painful memories and refresh their minds and hearts with a renewal of faith and trust. May the Spirit's grace mend what has been broken and restore what has been lost.
