We're all familiar with that beautiful phrase in the Hail Mary:
Pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death...
now and at the hour of our death...
Part of Mary's maternity for her sons and daughters includes mothering us at the time of our passing from this life to life forever with her son, Jesus.
Another prayer which highlights this gentle Marian care, leading us home at last, is the Salve Regina:
Another prayer which highlights this gentle Marian care, leading us home at last, is the Salve Regina:
Hail holy Queen, mother of mercy,
hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To you do we cry, the children of Eve;
to you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this land of exile.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
lead us home at last
and show us the blessed fruit of your womb,
Jesus:
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To you do we cry, the children of Eve;
to you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this land of exile.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
lead us home at last
and show us the blessed fruit of your womb,
Jesus:
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray the Salve Regina for yourself today, and for someone who has died...
