November 8 in the Month of All Souls

Image by Peter Wileman

We seem to give them back to you, O God,
who gave them to us.
Yet as you did not lose them in giving,
so we do not lose them by their return.
Not as the world gives do you give, O Lover of souls.
What you give, you take not away,
for what is yours is ours also
if we are yours.

And life is eternal and love immortal,
and death is only a horizon,
and a horizon is nothing, save the limit of our sight.
Lift us up, strong Son of God, that we may see farther;
cleanse our eyes that we may see more clearly;
draw us closer to yourself that we may know ourselves
to be nearer to our loved ones who are with you.

And while you prepare a place for us,
prepare us also for that happy place,
that where you are we may also be for evermore.

  1. I thought you had the month wrong - November 8 instead of December 8 - until I read in LINK "Saint of the Day" the information about Blessed John Dun Scotus. I should have known you wouldn't have it wrong! Your blog is a wonderful learning tool. Also, I don't know if I am particularly slow on the draw, but I just realized the significance of the Red Sox cufflinks and now our 9-0 Patriots cufflink to LINKS!!! Look forward to other cufflinks as the seasons unfold!

  2. I just realized I put this comment in the wrong comment box. Oops! I would like to comment here too. I don't know the name of a song that Carly Simon does, but it includes the lines "life is eternal, love is immortal and death is only a horizon."

  3. Daisy: Glad you enjoyed the LINKS change! I look forward to changing that image as sports and seasons call for.
