St. Nicholas, whose feast day is coming up on December 6, is also known as a patron saint of pawnbrokers. Legend has it that he provided a sack of gold to each of three women for their dowreys. Thus, the three gold balls that are the symbols for a pawnbroker's shop. I don't think anyone tried to do St. Nick in!
