On the local mania...

Someone asked me tonight where I was going to watch the Super Bowl. I replied, "How do you know I'm going to watch the Super Bowl?" Shocked, he said, "Well, after Christmas it's the second biggest holiday of the year! How could you NOT watch it?" (Yes, this person knows I'm a priest; no, this person wasn't kidding!)

Truth be told, I will be watching it but mostly because I was invited to join some folks to watch it with them. (On my own, I'd be blogging!)

I live just outside of Boston and I'm always happy to hear or read that the Pats or the Sox or the Celtics or the Bruins or the Revolution have won a game -- and certainly pleased if one of these teams wins a title. But I don't lose a moment's sleep over any of this. I'm not anxiously counting down the hours until the kickoff on Sunday. Any time the home town team wins, I'm happy for them; when they lose a game, I lose no sleep! I don't go to games and I rarely watch them on television. While I hope the Patriots win on Sunday and achieve this remarkable undefeated status, I wouldn't go within ten miles of the victory celebration in Boston on Tuesday if you paid me - even it weren't taking place on Primary Day.

I fault no one's team spirit: I don't understand it but, hey - go for it! I just hope that sports fans can understand that there are some folks out there who lead normal, happy, productive lives outside the battles fought on fields, floors and ice.

Certainly, there are others of my kind out there, too?

So, I'll be watching on Sunday and having a good time with the fans I'm with. And when it's all over, I hope everyone will going home to enjoy sweet dreams of Super Bowl XLII. I know I will!

And for all those loyal fans for whom this Sunday is second only to Christmas: Go Pats!

  2. I have become a regular Sox and Patriots fan because my adult children are and my husband and I are often invited to watch with them on HUGE 50+" High Def TV's, where you can count every blade of grass on the field and the bruises on the players faces!! Truth be told I am unimpressed by High Def TV and most of the games...but I do LOVE the time spent with my kids and their friends and am honored to be asked to join them...SO GO PATS!!! (just for the record I have NOT become a beer lover despite all the time I spend with them!!!...but I do make mean chicken wings and nacho's!! hmmm wonder if THATS why I get invited???!!!!)

  3. Amen, Concord Pastor. All of the hoopla over the Super Bowl is SO overdone. I was standing in line in a store yesterday and the clerk started talking to a customer about the Super Bowl. The customer looked at her, dismayed, and said, "Do you know there is a war going on? Do you know there are real things happening in life?" Amen. Amen. Amen.

Come on...it's all in fun. It's nice to take a break from all the chaos in the world and just sit back and enjoy the view!
    Go Pats!!

  5. You are so right, Regina. There is so much sadness in the world, that most of us try to take it all away in our own little ways. But you need some breaks from the sadness. If it takes a Patriot's game ... I'm there.
I hope everyone enjoys the game .. win or lose.

  6. I think happiness can be found in God. Not Tom Brady. It worries me the way people speak of Brady as if he is God.

  7. I am grateful that I was invited to watch the game with a few friends. We will be having a variety of hors d'oeuvres, chile and brownies. And this friend has a new HD TV (not 50"!) I am not a major sports fan, but I do think what our Boston/New England teams have accomplished this year is pretty phenomenal. And I think it is much more fun to celebrate (note "celebrate") with friends than alone. So....Go Pats!

  8. No, Tom Brady is not God, but a Patriot and not a Giant...that's all I need to know! And a damn good looking one at that!
Enjoy the game and have some fun.

You can't be serious. Who in their right mind would believe that.

Let's keep in mind that were talking sports, not religion. Big difference.

    Bless those Margarittas at Serafinas!!!
