Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent
This is only the second entry in this vein - and Lent is almost over! Above we have the Ayme family of Tingo.* Their food expenditure for one week for a family of nine is $31.55.
Consider what would it cost to take a family of nine to Mickey D's for burgers, fries and shakes?
The Ayme's favorite family recipe? Potato soup with cabbage!
Imagine your kitchen stocked with grains, fruits and vegetables. Period.
As we pray each Sunday in Lent at Holy Family:
For fasting that leads us to prayer
and for prayer that leads us to serve the poor...
let us pray to the Lord!
*Tingo Maria is the capital of Leoncio Prado Province in the Huánuco Region in central Peru

I realize that people who are about to be photographed are always told to "smile". That being said, I remain humbled by the smiles on the faces of the Ayme family. Perhaps I am reading too much into this portrait, however, I cannot imagine getting my children to smile contentedly in front of any collection of foodstuffs that did not contain all of their individual favorites. I won't bore you with that list or burden you with the cost. Suffice it to say this blog entry has given me "food for thought" about how to simplify my family's needs and desires.
