Word for the Week of June 8

Christ: the Divine Physician

(For the new Word for the Week see the top of the sidebar on the right.)

Some of us spend a lot of time trying to "get our act together" so that we can look presentable before God. We imagine that we can put God on hold, or hide behind a door or screen where God can't find or see us. Behind this imaginary barrier we hope to "tidy things up" so that we can sit down and have a chat with the Almighty.

God, of course, isn't fooled. God sees everything we are and everything we do - and loves us nonetheless! I imagine that God sometimes gets a kick out of our efforts to "put on a good face" for our moments with the Holy One.

Can you imagine going to the doctor and doing your best to hide your illness or its symptoms? Sometimes that's what we do with the Lord. We try to hide the weak spots, the unhealed places, the brokenness, the parts that hurt so that... so that what? So that the Divine Healer won't know we need healing?

As Jesus says quite clearly, he came to heal our spiritual sickness - and we, all of us, are the ones who need to see the Divine Physician.
