Meeting the challenges!

Lois Hill, left, works with Katie during a kayaking class last August at Lake Sunapee, N.H. At right is Hill's husband, Scott. The two will help the Peace Corps in St. Lucia.

Katie is from Concord. With her parents, Jane and Malcom, Katie beautifully challenges the challenges life has given her. Here you see her in a kayak with her instructor Lois as part of New England Handicapped Sports Association program that has kayaking in the summer and adaptive ski programs in the winter at Sunapee for individuals with disabilities.

A story about Lois and her husband Scott appeared in the August 12 edition of USA Today and you can read it here.

  1. Thanks so much for the photo. It has been several years since I have seen Katie, and sometimes wonder about how she is doing. She is quite a special young lady, and it is so good to see her. I have been truly blessed to have Katie touch my life. I worked with her at Concord Recreation. Something I will never forget. As did my daughter, who feels the same way about Katie. Jane and Malcolm are fantastic parents who have dedicated their life to Katie. they are all blessed, as are we all who know her. We can all learn from such a beautiful life from Katie.
I wish them all the very best. Hugs and kisses to Katie...a beautiful special lady.

  2. My late husband was with the first Peace Corps group to go to Turkey. He joined right after graduating from college in 1961. For him it was one of the best experiences of his life. A sister-in-law of mine joined the Peace Corps when she was in her late 50s. She was sent to Senegal for her two-year commitment. She learned to speak Wolof, the local language. Also, French. It was such a rewarding experience for her that she has returned each year for the last three years to her village for approximately three-month stays each time. She is due back from her latest trip any day. Her village has no running water, no electricity, etc. You get around on foot or by bicycle or to go into Dakar you bicycle to the main road and wait for a bus. Often several pass you by...too full to stop for you. I admire all of the people who have served in the Peace Corps. I think the volunteers show America at its very best.
