Word for the Weekend: July 12

Last Sunday we left Jesus just after he said that prophets have a hard time in their home towns. This week, he summons and sends the Twelve, two by two, to do a prophet's job. Jesus is quite particular in instructing them about what to bring along with them and what not to bring. Prepping us for this sendoff is a short passage from the book of the prophet Amos whom the Lord has made a prophet to the chosen people. Amos would have been happy to keep his old work as a part time shepherd and part time fig farmer.

The second lesson, from Ephesians, appears to be a hymn of blessing and may be proclaimed in a shorter or a longer form. Either way, this text is a fine vade mecum for prophets ancient or contemporary!

A prophet's work isn't easy and is never done - and it's ours as followers of Jesus. It behooves us, then, to pay careful attention to these readings by checking out the texts and background on them right here and by helping our young ones prepare to hear the word right here.
