Feast of the Guardian Angels - October 2

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Guardian Angels.

The scriptural basis for our understanding of guardian angels is found in Jesus' words in Matthew 18:10...

See that you do not despise one of these little ones,
for I say to you that their angels in heaven
always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

And here's the Opening Prayer of today's Mass:

God our Father,
in your loving providence
you send your holy angels to watch over us.
Hear our prayers,
defend us always by their protection
and let us share your life with them for ever.
We as this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

  1. I was struck by the reference to the "little ones", so I went to the gospel reference. It says,

"Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me."

"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."

"Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come!"

Bishop Raymond Lahey from Nova Scotia was arrested last week, charged with possessing and importing child pornography on his laptop, which was randomly examined by customs as he returned from a trip to Europe. Read the details here: http://thechronicleherald.ca/Front/1145491.html

Following a meeting of the UN human rights council in Geneva, the Vatican’s permanent observer to the UN, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, reacted to criticism of the church’s handling of sexual abuse charges by putting up a pitiful defense. See his "indefensible defense" here. http://www.watoday.com.au/world/vatican-responds-to-sex-abuse-accusations-20090930-gciy.html

How can these be the leaders of our church? What would Jesus do?
