Will the good work be brushed aside?

An editorial from Commonweal's latest issue: Benedict in the Dock.

  1. This argument that the liberal social milieu of that time was to blame for the sexual conduct of these priests is a poor, deceitful and desperate excuse.True, nobody is perfect but this is sexual abuse we are talking about, not healthy mutual relationships. The church is forever preaching to us that Catholic morality and values are separate from the "go with the flow" of society and have been rigid and harshly dogmatic in all aspects of sexuality in many cases so it is sheer hypocrisy to blame society for the behaviour of these priests. This view also panders to and colludes with the regressive and repressive stultifying ultra- conservative sectors of the Catholic Church who would like to put back all the genuine progress we have seen since vatican II. The hierarchical church is fast becoming a parody of itself.I feel it has stunted peoples faith, has made them lose confidence in the Vatican and has overwhelmed people with its lack of openness and suffocation of reform that is necessary for the 21st Century."Where there is no vision the people will perish".It seems that The Vatican is over-populated with many dinosaurs and we know what happened to them !! This whole thing is so depressing.
