Met any good Samaritans along your path recently?

There's still time to read/review the scriptures for this Sunday's liturgy! For the readings, commentary on them and for hints to help children prepare to hear the Word, take a look at this earlier post.

As the sculpture group above suggests, this Sunday's gospel tells the story of the good Samaritan.
Have you been one? Do you need one? Who needs you to stop along the road to offer some help?

  1. Times change. Nowadays, we don't have to stop to help. When we see someone in need, we take out our cell phone and dial "911". Otherwise, the person in need might sue us, or some other litigation might ensue,or it could be a ruse.
Do priests even stop at accidents, any more?

  2. I agree, Faith. But sometimes calling 911 is just what a contemporary good Samaritan needs to do - and sometimes folks see a need for help but don't even call that number.

I would not stop on the road for an accident - very often another vehicle stopping (no matter whose it is) becomes a hindrance not a help. Were I to happen on such a scene (not on a highway, for instance) and I could get close then I would. I'd assess the situation, figure out who was in charge and, when he/she was free, I'd offer that I was a priest and available if help was needed. Even when I'm on call at the local hospital and I'm called, I try to work carefully with the medical personnel in charge so that I can offer my services without interfering with theirs. I've found that less invasive I am in such situations, the quicker I can get access to the sick person and the family.
