New law: no texting while driving in Massachusetts

I recently posted a video on the importance of wearing seat belts in cars.

The video below is a PSA from the UK and the topic is texting while driving. It's graphic and not easy to watch -- but certainly makes its point.

As of October 1, 2010, texting while driving will be illegal in my home state, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  1. I applaud this article. I see it all the time on the roads near my house. I also just learned that for every 6 seconds a driver spends texting, 4.6 of those seconds are with their eyes off the road, which makes texting the most dangerous cell phone activity anyone can engage in while operating a 5,000 pound piece of steel and glass. This activity produces 6,000 highway deaths a year and that number is rising.

I decided to do something about it after my three year old daughter was nearly run down right in front of me by a texting driver last fall. Instead of an expensive shackle that locks down phones and alienates the user (especially teens) I built a tool called OTTER that is a simple app for smartphones – low cost, no recurring fees. Its an easy way to manage that text and drive temptation…

  2. As a policy, I do not post comments that are in any way commercial but I'm making an exception with the comment above. Erik Wood is offering, at a nominal fee, a service that I believe has the potential to save lives. I look forward to the day when his app is available for iPhones and I can use it myself.
