Word for the Weekend - December 5

Peaceable Kingdom by Michael McGrath

Is it my imagination or does time fly in Advent? Hard to believe that it's already time to read and pray over the scriptures for the Second Sunday of Advent.

The gospel for Advent II always gives us a portrait of John the Baptist, this year from Matthew's gospel with a description of John's sartorial taste and his favorite menu.  The language of John's preaching is strong here, proclaiming a Christ who will come to sweep clean the chaff of this world.

In the day's first lesson Isaiah is looking forward towards a future with a good king to govern God's people after the reign of Ahaz, a king who had no respect for the covenant.  Believers find in Isaiah's vision a description the peace that comes from the Lord we name our King.

Paul, writing to the Romans, reminds us that in Christ God has fulfilled his promises to the Chosen and has welcomed the Gentiles as well into his reign.

You'll find the readings and commentary on them here.  Take a look at the texts: the first includes some of the most beautiful imagery in the bible; the gospel paints a good picture of Jesus' cousin John and Paul's letter contains a prayer for those who need encouragement for endurance.

Bringing young ones to Mass with you this weekend?  Check here for hints on helping them prepare to hear the Lord's Word.
