Five Wise Virgins by Cornelis Monsma |
It's Wednesday and it's not too early to be thinking and reflecting on the scriptures we'll hear proclaimed this coming weekend on the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time.
The gospel this Sunday is Matthew's familiar story of the 5 wise and the 5 foolish virgins, attendants at a wedding, waiting for the bridegroom to arrive. The first reading, from the Book of Wisdom also offers us a wise woman, Wisdom herself! The second lesson, from 1 Thessalonians, is a text also found in the lectionary for funeral rites. This scripture features the second coming of Christ, the Bridegroom.
I'm guessing that many preachers may find in these readings a good platform for a homily related to November, the Month of All Souls.
What do you find in these scriptures? Well, first you'll need to read them! The texts and brief commentary on them are here. Bringing children to Mass with you? Here are some hints to help your young ones prepare to hear the Lord's Word this weekend.
