Pick up your mat!

That's what Jesus says to a paralyzed man in this weekend's gospel: "Pick up your mat and walk!"

Who knows how long the man had been on that mat? Certainly, it was his bed. Perhaps it was also his home.  That mat was the footprint of his place in the world...

Was he, even for a moment, torn,
needing to choose between:

the unknown freedom of healing 

and

the security of the familiar?

The gospel tells us the man got up at once, took his mat and walked away.

How about you and me?

Do we reach for healing when it comes
or are we tempted to hold on to what we've always known?
