Your prayer and mine, driving to work this morning

As I've mentioned several times, writing this page helps keep me faithful to own prayer life.  And when sharing that here helps you with your prayer - praise God from whom all blessings flow!

A case in point...  Driving to my office this morning I was thinking about a component in each of my Pentecost Novena posts: the daily listing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the question that follows, For which of these gifts will I pray today?

In my mind's eye I began to review my schedule for the day: the people I'd be seeing, the meetings I had, decisions I'd need to make, the calls and emails waiting for my response, the wake I'd be going to...  And I began to ask, "What gifts of the Spirit will I need to make my way through this day?

When I go to my desk, I took another look at today's Novena prayer which I had posted just after midnight and I prayed through the questions there, adding the word "today" and changing "do" to "will" in each instance:
When I'm being selfish and foolish today,
   will I ask for wisdom?
When I'm confused and confounded today,
   will I ask for understanding?
When I have choices to make today,
will I ask for right judgement?
When I find it hard to say and to do the right thing today,
   will I ask for courage?
When I know how much I don't know about God today,
will I ask for deeper knowledge?
When I realize I only pray when I want something today,
   will I ask for reverence?
When I think I pretty much know everything today,
will I ask for a sense of wonder?
When it seems like I've forgotten who God is in my life today,
will I make time to sit quietly in his presence?
Then I "prayed" my day's calendar in light of the gifts that might help me and serve those I'd be seeing along the way.

Through that prayer, my day was placed in God's hands and framed in the gifts of the Spirit.  More than once in the course of the day did my morning drive's prayer come to mind and thoughts of the gifts I'd need...

I'm going to put one of my pocket prayer crosses on my dashboard tomorrow morning as a reminder to pray my day's work on the way to the office and to ask for the Spirit's gifts to help me through my day.

As I've mentioned several times, writing this page helps keep me faithful to own prayer life.  And when sharing that here helps you with your prayer - praise God from whom all blessings flow!
