Music and Word for Corpus Christi

My Widget by austin fleming on Grooveshark

This widget (which might not work on your smart phone) includes 20 songs (chant, choral, instrumental, classical, country, spirituals, contemporary) for prayer in preparation for celebrating Corpus Christi Sunday this coming weekend.  Something for everyone here: Byrd, Elgar, Bernstein, Mozart, Wainwright and more.

You might want to listen to some of the music as you read and ponder the scriptures for this Sunday's feast.  You'll find the texts and commentary on them here.  And if you're bringing children to church with you, here are some hints for helping them prepare to hear the Word, too.

This year's readings for Corpus Christi are filled with images of the cleansing, saving blood of the covenants, old and new.  The texts from Exodus and Hebrews are perfectly linked by Psalm 116 and its refrain, I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.  These three scriptures offer a summary of our understanding sacrifice as it spans the two covenants.  In the gospel (Mark) we find ourselves in the upper room where Christ invites his friends to drink from the cup of his blood which he will shed the next day in the sacrifice of the Cross.

There's no better way to prepare for Sunday worship than to study the scriptures we'll hear proclaimed.  I believe some time with these scriptures and the commentary will be especially fruitful and helpful for celebrating the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
