Praying 10 minutes today: WEDNESDAY 10/17

Find a quiet time and place to pray... take a few deep breaths...
be still... and know that God is near...

A word to reflect on:
For God commands the angels
to guard you in all your ways...

- Psalm 91

(Before moving on to the reflection below,
spend some quiet time with the scripture verse above...)

Lord: I could use a few more angels!

I'd welcome your messengers
   to stand by my side,
to guard me in all my ways,
to guide me in the right direction...

Send me some angels, Lord,
with courage and strength for when I'm afraid,
with wisdom and counsel for when I'm confused,
with knowledge to teach me what's right and what's wrong...

Send a flight of angels
with the gift of right judgment to guide my discernment,
with wonder and awe to lift up my prayer,
with desire to draw me to seek what is true...

Send down your angels, Lord,
with a spirit of reverence to humble my pride,
with kindness disposing my heart to serve others,
with gentleness shaping my words and my deeds...

Assign your angels to bring me the grace
of peace when anger spoils my spirits,
of joy when sorrows flood my soul,
of love when selfishness closes my heart...

Send an army of angels
to keep me faithful in the face of temptation,
to help me endure in times of trouble,
to keep me pure when I'm settling for less...

Angels, Lord!
I need angels to guard me in all my ways
and guide me safely along the right path...

Open my mind and my heart, my spirit and soul,
to know how much I need your help, the favor of your angels:
your messengers and mercies, gifts and graces,
         your boons and blessings
and whatever godsends you might grant -
          Lord, I need them all!

Help me see how much I need you, Lord:
   you're my strength in weakness,
my wisdom in doubt, my truth in confusion,
joy in sorrow, my peace in crisis...

In the quiet of my prayer, Lord,
open my eyes to the angels,
      the messengers you send
to visit with me each day...

Open my heart to family and friends,
   to neighbors and colleagues:
all angels of compassion, messengers of love,
sent from you to lift my spirits
and fill my days with your peace...

Open me to the messengers I meet in the scriptures:
Isaiah and Ruth, Job and the psalmist,
      Matthew, Mark, Luke and John...

Open me to the messengers of grace
who visit my soul, my hopes and dreams,
      my imagination and my prayer...

In the stillness of this moment, Lord,
help me hear your Spirit's wings,
beating with grace and showering my soul
with the gift of your presence...

Send me your angels, Lord,
   to stand by my side,
to guard me in all my ways,
to guide me in the right direction...

To ponder and pray over...
When has an angel of God's blessing touched my life?
Might the help of angels bring the peace I seek?
Do I need angelic help to get me through my nights and days?
How might an angel guard and guide me today?
What will I ask of the Lord today?
From this prayer time, what word or phrase will I keep with me
to carry through the rest of my day?

(After you spend some time with these questions,
pray the reflection above one more time...)
