Christmas still alive in churches!
Shepherds why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
These are words from the second verse of Angels We Have Heard on High, our recessional song at Mass for the Feast of the Holy Family.
I think most church-going Catholics understand that the Christmas season runs a couple weeks beyond the day-after-Christmas gift return madness at the malls and aren't surprised to find us still singing carols after their sudden disappearance from TV and radio.
But I took a distinct pleasure in thinking about why we "prolong our joyous strains..." As I walked down the aisle four times this weekend singing that song, I realized that for these two weeks after Christmas the celebration is ours, in the household of faith.
It will be months before these beloved tunes are used again commercially. Let's enjoy them while they're still with us!
