Lent: finding the thread you follow

Weaving by Astrid Monique

The Way It Is
There's a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn't change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can't get lost.
 Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding.
You don't ever let go of the thread.

- William Stafford

Lent is a time for naming
the "thread you follow..."

We lead lives of many threads.
Some are stronger than others,
some are of our own making,
some are woven into the fabric of our being
with or without our permission...

The Spirit weaves
the thread of God's grace and design

into the cloth of our existence,
with or without our permission...

God's thread in our lives doesn't wear or change:
strong and pliable, it hems and mends,
tucks and tailors
with or without our permission...

Lent is a time for finding and naming
the threads we follow
and the threads that follows us...
Lent is a time for finding again
(or discovering for the first time)
how God threads our lives with his,

how God's thread never lets go
and how we must never let go of it...
