Worthwhile commentary on the resignation

There's plenty out there to read about the pope's resignation - most of it repetitive and much of it unimaginative and ecclesiastically naive.

But here's a piece by The Anchoress, Elizabeth Scalia, with this fascinating lede:
In hindsight, we’re seeing clues, now, and reading words he uttered indicating that Pope Benedict XVI has clearly been thinking of renouncing the papal throne for some time.

Forgive me if this sounds absurd on the face of it, but I am wondering if, despite these pieces of evidence, Benedict’s recent entry into Twitter has had anything to do with the seeming abruptness of his announcement.
The post is titled, "Prayer and Penance: Did Twitter Hasten Benedict’s Retirement?"  Elizabeth's take is unique, imaginative and insightful.

Give it a read - it's worth your time.

  2. I am so grateful you directed our attention to Elizabeth Scalia's post. After reading it, I printed it out and read it aloud to my husband and son (age 20, not a child!). I wept as I read it, a catharsis I needed. I have been so heartened to know that so many are not deceived and love this dear Pope as much as I do. And God bless uou, I read your blog daily.
