Pause for Prayer: Pentecost Novena - Day Eight

We're offering some special prayers, a novena, in preparation for Pentecost Sunday which falls this year on May 19, 2013.  Here's some more info and background on Pentecost and these prayers.

• Reflect on these words, prayed by the bishop 
when you received the Sacrament of Confirmation:
     All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 
        by water and the Holy Spirit in baptism
        you freed your sons and daughters from sin
        and gave them new life. 
     Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. 
     Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, 
        the spirit of right judgment and courage, 
           the spirit of knowledge and reverence. 
      Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. 
      We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

       

• The gifts of the Holy Spirit all complement one another,
     each one leads to and follows from the others...

• All the Spirit's gifts work to make me clay in the potter's hands,
      that God might mold and shape me as he created me to be...

• At different times, in different ways I need all of the Spirit's gifts
      and at all times in all ways, I need each of the Spirit's gifts... 

• Today's prayer invites me to review the Spirit's gifts,
      to pray for them again and remember how much I need them
         if I would be a follower of Jesus whose Spirit lives within me...   

Let us pray...

Come, Holy Spirit,
and fill my heart again
with the fire and power of your gifts…

Come, Holy Spirit,
and with wisdom help me know what’s real:
to see through God’s own eyes…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and with understanding light my way
to follow all that faith reveals…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and be my beacon of right judgment, 
with counsel prudent, just and sure…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and kindle in my soul the courage 
to do what’s right, what’s true and pure…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and give me knowledge of God’s plans
for my life, my gifts and talents…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and bend my mind and heart
to reverence God before, above all others…

Come, Holy Spirit, 

and in awe and wonder stoke my heart’s desire
to do always what God asks of me and nothing less...

Come, Holy Spirit,

fill my mind and heart with your light and gifts
and my soul with your breath of peace…

Come, Holy Spirit,

and draw me to the Father's love
through Christ, my Lord and Savior…

Amen.
