WORD for the Weekend: MAY 5

Time to open the scriptures and begin to prepare to hear the WORD to be proclaimed this coming weekend, the Sixth Sunday of Easter.

You'll find the texts and commentary on them here and if you're shepherding children to Mass this weekend, take a look at these hints for helping children prepare to hear the scriptures.

The first lesson this weekend tackles the issue of whether or not Gentile converts to Christianity needed first to become Jews (that is, be circumcised). There's an interesting report here of how the early church dealt with controversy.

The second lesson offers another awesome vision from Revelation. The temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed - John offers here an image of a new Jerusalem descending from heaven - for John that's the Church of Christ, standing on the foundation of the 12 apostles. And what glorious imagery for the Lamb of God!

The day's gospel takes us back to Jesus' farewell discourse at the Last Supper in which the Lord promises to send an Advocate, the Spirit, and to leave with his friends the gift of his peace - a peace beyond any the world might offer.  (This text and this peace formed the theme of my prayer post on Wednesday, May 1.)
