(Today's Pause for Prayer
follows some introductory notes...)
At the end of the November 6 general audience in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis drew attention by warmly embracing a man who suffers from neurofibromatosis, a rare disease causing neuronal tumors all over his body... As he carried out his typical greeting of pilgrims at the conclusion of the general audience, Pope Francis paused for several minutes to receive the sick man in his arms. Moments later, he took the man’s face in his hands, kissed him, and gave him a blessing. -

“God meddles in our miseries,
he approaches our wounds and heals them with his hands;
it was to have hands he became man...
God saves us with tenderness,
he saves us with caresses,
he saves us with his life given for us.”
– Pope Francis, homily on October 22
Audio for today's Pause for Prayer
Meddle in my misery, Lord:
touch me where I hurt, heal my pain,
caress my sins with mercy
and save me with the life you gave
upon your cross...
Meddle in my misery, Lord:
don't let me wallow in self-pity
or take refuge in my pain
but free me from my fears
and give me peace...
Make my hands yours, Lord,
and my touch tender when I reach
to heal the wounds of those around me,
to caress the grief my neighbor bears
in body and in soul...
Help me hold the unembraceable
and gently touch what's strange and foreign,
not yet known but in your image made:
beautiful in your eyes and beloved, I pray,
in mine...
As you reach out to heal my wounds,
as you embrace me with my faults,
so open wide my arms and heart
to welcome you in all who cross my path,
who wait for you in my embrace...
Amen.
