Pause for Prayer: SATURDAY 12/26

The marathon is over, Lord!

Somehow we've made it from December 24 to December 26
- and for this we're grateful...

But so much, too much hype, Lord:
too much money spent
on stuff not really wanted,
on things not really needed...

So many huge expectations
- and not a few went unmet...

So much anticipation
for just one day
- so easily, so often afterwards,
tinged with disappointment...

So much build-up
and too much let-down...

And all of this in your name:
Lord, have mercy,
Christ, have mercy on us!

Between the setting up and taking down,
the trips to catch the sales
and the rushed return of things we really didn't like,
give us the gift of quiet time today
to recollect what this was all about:
A baby born two thousand years ago
whose life and words and death
gave rise
to faith, to hope, to mercy and to love...
Help us keep it simple, Lord,
help us keep Christmas and its message
as simple as it truly is...

Draw us back to the beginning,
to the time when you had nothing
save your mother's love,
the shepherds' awe,
the angels' song of praise...

Let something simple
settle in our hearts, Lord,
something simple
giving rise to love,
to hope and faith in you
and in your gracious care for us...

Amen.
