Today's the feast of St. Nicholas:
friend of the poor, giver of gifts,
precursor of Santa Claus!
Lord,
While shopping for presents for family and friends,
getting ready to give them much more than they need...
While speeding to spend more than I can afford
on things that will break and soon be forgotten...
While trimming my tree and going to parties,
writing out cards and wrapping up gifts...
Keep me mindful, O Lord, of your humble birth
and the claim of the poor on the bounty that's mine...
Amen.
Remember:
the only gift Jesus wants for his birthday
is for us to care for one another
- beginning with the poor...
