Forgive us, Lord,
for yesterday's over-indulgence
and teach us
neither to waste what's ours in abundance
nor to hoard the goods that others need so much...
As we plan and shop for Christmas
make us grateful for all we have
and mindful of others' basic, pressing needs...
Tempt us to be generous, Lord,
in opening our hearts and wallets
to those who truly need a share
of all we have to give...
As we do our Christmas shopping, Lord,
remind us that the greatest gifts we have to offer
can't be bought or wrapped or tied with bows:
our time, our patience and kindness,
our fidelity, good will and encouragement,
our love, compassion and understanding,
our mercy, forgiveness and pardon...
Help us find the deeper meaning
in the days that lie ahead, Lord:
all that's holy, healing and helpful,
making us and those around us
truly happy, blessed and joyful...
Amen.
