NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 4/19

Seems to me, Lord,
that as the sun goes down each day
my fears and worries rise up!

Out from evening's shadows creeps anxiety,
scratching at my trust and hope
'til shards of doubt scrape against my faith:
what if? what next? why here? why now?
what to do? where to turn?
an awfulizing stream of doubts
robbing me of peace of mind and heart...

Doubt tempts me, Lord,
tempts me to mistrust the future and forget the past:
to worry about tomorrow, overlooking all the times
when you've been by my side,
day after day,
week after week,
year after year...

I'm so quick to forget all the ways
you've guarded me, guided me,
graced me with your abiding presence,
your gentle strength, your generous mercy,
and your faithful compassion,
day after day,
week after week,
year after year...

You didn't solve all my problems, Lord,
but you walked me through them
'til peace was mine again...

You didn't answer every prayer as I had hoped,
but you never failed, Lord, to listen, to hear my prayer
and offer me, if not what I wanted, what I needed...

Remind me of my past, Lord,
refresh my heart with its own story
of your faithful and abiding love,
day after day,
week after week,
year after year...

Protect me, Lord, as I stay awake
and watch over me as I sleep
that awake I may keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Day After Day, Week After Week
