We're between breaths, Lord:
'twixt exhaling the longest night of election returns
and inhaling long days of protesting their results...
The air we breathe is, at the same time,
light with joy and elation
and thick with disappointment and controversy:
joy will be muted by litigation,loss will mourn in a veil of mistrust...
Having prayed already this week
for trust, peace and patience,
we come to you once again, Lord,
to ask you to help us
accept the things we cannot change,
to change the things we can
and to plead for the wisdom to know the difference...
We pray for that serenity of mind and heart
where Wisdom comes to make her home...
We pray for wisdom, Lord:
for the grace to see what's happening as you see it;
for the grace to understand and accept one another
as you understand and accept each of us;
and for the grace to speak as you would speak,
to act as you would have us do
and to love our neighbor as you love us,
fully, freely and with forgiveness...
Give us the powerful breath of your Spirit, Lord,
to encourage and empower us,
to sustain us through the days and weeks ahead,
to be our life and our hope as we make our way
along the path we walk...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your prayer...
Amen.
