NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 1/21

I remember being away on retreat some years back
and sitting in the retreat house chapel late at night,
so late that I had the chapel all to myself...

And I remember thinking: at that moment,
no one, no one in the world knew
precisely where I was
- except you, Lord, you alone...

Friends and family knew I was away on retreat
but no one, no one in creation knew
exactly where I was just then
- but you, Lord, only you...

And I remember finding in that prayerful secret
such great comfort, consolation
and an intimacy shared only
between you and me...

Of course, Lord,
you always know my whereabouts,
I'm always in your gaze:
as a mother attuned to her child's needs
you keep a faithful eye on me
and listen, always, with an open heart
for my every laugh or cry or prayer...

You never lose track of me, Lord, never misplace me,
never wonder for a moment where I've got to
nor forget a word I've spoken,
a tear I've wept, a hurt I've held,
a joy I've clung to...

You are, indeed, ever present to me
and all I know and feel, think and dream,
all I long for, all I need...

Though I might miss you, right by my side,
though I might fail to tell you hello
or bid you goodnight,
though I forget where I've been,
where I am or where I'm going
- still you, Lord, are ever faithful to me,
to my journey, my thoughts, my trials
and my prayer...

And so you're with me now, Lord,
protecting me as this day ends
and through the night while I'm asleep
that awake, I might keep watch for you
and asleep, rest in your vigilant peace...

Amen.

His Eye Is On The Sparrow by Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount

Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is he
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches over me

His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me
I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me…

I sing because I´m happy
I sing because I´m free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me
He watches me
I know
He watches
Me
