1/20/21

NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 1/20

It was a very peaceful day, Lord
    - and for that alone we're grateful!

We heard glowing words of promise:
help us bring them to fulfillment...

We invoked your Name and Word, Lord:
keep us faithful to your Spirit...

We saw red and blue together:
bind us more and more as one...

The balance of power shifts now:
help us keep the power balanced...

Pride and anger will be tempting:
make us humble, kind and calm...

Now a new beginning beckons:
guide our steps as we go forth...

Protect us, Lord, not just tonight
but through the years ahead
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Tonight's music is American Anthem, the powerful and prayerful song the president quoted in his inaugural speech today...

American Anthem by Gene Scheer,
                                               performed by Denyce Graves

All we've been given
By those who came before
The dream of a nation
Where freedom would endure
The work and prayers
Of centuries
Have brought us to this day
What shall be our legacy?
What will our children say?

Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings
I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America
America
I gave my best to you

Each generation from the plains
To distant shore
With the gifts they were given
Were determined to leave more
Valiant battles fought together
Acts of conscience fought alone
These are the seeds
From which America has grown

Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America, America
I gave my best to you

For those who think
They have nothing to share
Who fear in their hearts
There is no hero there
Know each quiet act
Of dignity is
That which fortifies
The soul of a nation
That never dies

Let them say of me
I was one who believed
In sharing the blessings
I received
Let me know in my heart
When my days are through
America, America
I gave my best to you
