NIGHT PRAYER: Saturday 5/22

Every night, Lord,
I pray for your Spirit to hover
above me, around and within me...

I pray for your Spirit to surround and embrace,
to hold and to heal, to fill the hearts of all,
especially my family and friends
and those this night most in need
of your Spirit's holy presence...

And tonight, Lord, the eve of Pentecost,
I pray for your Spirit to envelop the world
with peace and joy, with mercy and pardon,
with hope for better times...

On this vigil of Pentecost,
I pray that your Spirit infuse the world, its nations,
our cities, streets and neighborhoods
with all the gifts we need to make real changes:
to reform what's evil, overturn what's unjust,
heal what's bleeding and mend what's broken...

For all of this, Lord, we need your Spirit,
we need the help of your Spirit's gifts
and we need your help sooner than later:
O God, we need it now...

With the Spirit's power, Lord,
protect us while we lie awake and watch over us as we sleep,
that awake, we might keep watch for your Spirit's gifts
and asleep, rest in your Spirit's peace...

Amen.

Come, Holy Spirit by Taize

Come, Holy Spirit,
from heaven shine forth
with your glorious light.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!
(Come, Holy Spirit!)

Come, Father of the poor,
come, generous Spirit,
come, light of our hearts.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!

Come from the four winds, O Spirit,
come breath of God;
disperse the shadows over us,
renew and strengthen your people.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!

Most kindly warming light!
Enter the inmost depths of our hearts,
for we are faithful to you.
Without your presence
we have nothing worthy, nothing pure.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!

You are only comforter, Peace of the soul.
In the heat you shade us;
in our labor you refresh us,
And in trouble you are our strength.
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!

On all who put their trust in you
and receive you in faith,
shower all your gifts.
Grant that they may grow in you
and persevere to the end.
Give them lasting joy!
Veni, Sancte Spiritus!
