On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element of the day's mass.
Tonight we reflect on the words of Jesus (Ephphatha! Be opened!) and
we'll pray with Carrie Allwine's musical setting of the same. My homily
from today's mass provides background you might find helpful as you
offer this Night Prayer.
The man in today's gospel was deaf and mute, Lord...
I think of how often I'm deaf, Lord:
deaf to your voice, your word and your wisdom.
How often I'm too busy to listen,
failing to hear when you speak to me
and the times when I hear you loud and clear
but act as though I heard nothing at all...
Open my ears to hear you, Lord,
and open the ears of my heart
to hear what only the heart can hear,
what only the soul can know...
And I think of how often I'm mute, Lord:
my voice silent, when I ought to speak out,
my lips tight, when the truth needs telling,
my mouth closed, not open in prayer...
O Lord, open my lips
and my mouth will sing your praise;
give me a voice to speak in your name,
free my tongue to declare your mercy...
Ephphatha!
Be opened my ears!
Be opened my ears to the word of the Lord,
to hear what the Lord may speak!
Ephphatha!
Be opened my mouth!
Be opened my mouth to sing the Lord's song,
to announce his glory, day after day!
Ephphatha!
Be opened my heart, be
opened my mind:
fill me inside with your love and your peace,
open me, Lord, with your mercy and grace...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep,
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

Ephphatha: Be Opened by Carrie Allwine
Ephphatha!
Be opened my eyes,
be
opened my eyes,
be
opened my eyes,
Ephphatha!
Be opened my ears, Lord
help
me to hear your Word
Ephphatha!
Be opened my heart,
be
opened my mind, God fill me inside,
with
Your Love
1)
If you can make a blind man see,
open
me Lord, set my soul free
2)
If you can make the deaf hear
and
the mute speak,
fill
my ears and tongue
with
Your Word so sweet
3)
Help me to receive your love
Help
me to live your love
Help
me to give your love
Ephphatha!
Open
me, open me, Lord
