September by half is history, Lord,
and how quickly autumn falls on our path,
on our hearts and souls, our sorrows and joys,
our thoughts and hopes and dreams...
An incarcerated friend is counting down
the days 'til he finally walks free
so September 15 marks another mile
on his path to the door of the rest of his life...
Other friends struggle, Lord, just to put
one foot in front of the other,
walking a path from yesterday's burdens
to a future, uncertain, unknown...
And some of us, Lord, we're catching our breath,
just marking time and scoping the lay of the land,
wondering where the path will lead
and which way to turn where the road divides...
And there you are in the midst of us all
on every day in any month of the year:
there to lead us, to guide us, to be our path,
our way, our truth and our life...
Just yesterday you were with us, Lord
and you'll be there tomorrow, too,
but today's the day that you've made, Lord,
and now's the time you enter our lives
to meet and heal us just where we are...
Welcome, Lord! Come and and sit down!
Safeguard all our comings and goings:
that awake, we might keep watch for you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
