Night Prayer *B* for Saturday 12/18

In posting the Night Prayer for lighting the fourth candle on the Advent Wreath - I forgot to continue the series on the O Antiphons!  This NIGHT PRAYER *B* will remedy that omission!

A little background...   Christmas is just days away! In the prayer of the church, there are special introductory verses sung at Evening Prayer, each naming a particular "title" of the Lord whose coming again we await, each verse beginning with "O...." We are familiar with these special verses because they constitute the lyrics of the 7 verses of the well known Advent hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!"   (More info here!)

The second of the antiphons is, "O Adonai" or, in English, "O Lord."

O God, engrave your law upon my heart,
inscribe your truth upon my soul,
write your wisdom in my thoughts
that all my words and deeds might show
that you are LORD of all my life...

Be the Lord of all my days,
the guardian of my nights
the keeper of my secrets,
the captain of my soul...

You are the Lord of all I am,
the Lord of all I do,
the Lord of all I'm called to be:
your student and your servant...

Come and train me in your ways,
instruct me in your justice
form me as your own, my Lord,
my God, my hope, my all...

Protect me, Lord while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

I the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save

I who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord,
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord,
If you lead me,
I will hold your people in my heart

I, the Lord of snow and rain
I have borne my people's pain
I have wept for love of them
They turn away

I will break their hearts of stone
Give them hearts for love alone
I will speak my words to them
Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord,
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord,
If you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart

I, the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save

Finest bread I will provide
'Til their hearts be satisfied
I will give my life to them
Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
