Forgive us, Lord, for once again
the bully's lust for all the marbles
has spoiled the peace on our playground
and proven, sadly, one more time:
we don't play well with others...
This time he's the bully,
though other times it's her
or me, or them, or us,
as if we all take turns
at sending someone home in tears:
we don't play well with others...
This time, Lord, the stakes are high
and the guns in play aren't toys:
some will bleed and some will fall
and many grieve
what foolishness and pride will prove:
we don't play well with others...
Forgive us, Lord, as once again
we turn to you in prayer
and beg your mercy,
pleading for the grace to learn
how to live in peace,
as your sisters and your brothers,
one family, wherever we may be...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
