Coffee in the Morning by George Mendoza
Good morning, good God!
I know I'm bold this morning, Lord,
to make an offering
of what's not mine to offer
- and yet, an offering I'm sure already rests
in a place deep in your heart...
I offer you the plight, the pain, the loss
of the people of Ukraine...
I offer you their steadfast love
for the land they call their own, their home...
I offer you their gritty courage
while danger's at their door;
their noble bravery
in the face of heartless savagery;their fierce loyalty
to their homeland and their heritage...
I offer you their loss of life and limb,
of their homes and their belongings,
of all the treasured tokens of everything they cherish...
I offer you the hopes and dreams
that evil seeks to snatch
from their peaceful hearts and souls...
I offer you the hardship and the suffering of their pilgrimage:
their flight from home, to find a place to stay
until it's safe one day to go home once again...
I offer you their faith, Lord,
the faith of your Ukrainian sons and daughters,
the faith that gives them courage, strength and hope,
the faith that fires their willingness to sacrifice,
the faith that helps them make their way, from day to day,
from war to peace,
from oppression to freedom,
from darkness to light,
from fear to trust in you
in whom they put their faith...
As with your chosen nation long ago, Lord,
espouse the people of Ukraine
and take them to yourself;
hold them close; protect and deliver them;
and bring them the peace they long for,
the peace we pray for,
the peace that they deserve...
All this I offer you this morning, Lord,
- along with one more plea.
Move us, the rest of the world,
to move, to act, to do what must be done,
to give up what must be sacrificed,
to stand for what is just,
to use our strength for making peace
for our sisters and our brothers in Ukraine
and for all our family, all around this world...
Amen.
