Not all that long ago, Lord,
when my life was much busier,
time seemed as the air:
that amorphous substance I take for granted,
yet upon which my entire being,
all my life,
depends...
And many were the times then,Lord,
when I had to stop
- and catch my breath...
Gratefully,
I find my pace these days much slower
and time now seems as water:
a tangible fluid, a flowing river
enveloping, carrying, caressing,
my every word, desire and deed...
And I know, I feel, I'm being swept along
to that ocean of your being
- where all is one and time will be no more...
But for now
(and a long time yet, I pray)
I delight in such intimacy:
time's embrace, its claim, its kiss,
its breath, its warmth, its grip
for in time it's you I meet, Lord:
you on whom my entire being,
all my life,
depends...
I thank you, Lord, for time,
for the precious gift of time:
time I've spent,
the time I have
and time that's yet to come
all time with you who promise me
a life beyond all time...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me as I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
