Day's end is near
and it's time to get ready for bed,
for rest and for sleep...
But for so many people, Lord
- the day just won't end:
it will stretch through the dark of night
as folks wrestle with anxiety and troubling dreams...
And one thing's for certain, Lord:
worry and fear don't make for good bunk mates!
We're anxious about so many things!
We're anxious about Ukraine and world peace;
we're anxious about the virus and sickness of all kinds;
we're anxious for our young people
and anxious for our elders;
we're anxious for struggling neighbors
and for others 'round the world we've never met;
we're anxious about stability and common sense in our nation;
we're anxious about relations between races, colors and creeds;
we're anxious about employment and the economy;
we're anxious about things being normal again
and anxious about things never being normal again;
we're anxious about the private, personal, painful realities
we all carry in our hearts - all the time;
and, Lord, we're even anxious
about being too anxious...
We need to remember what Pope John XXIII used to pray
before he went to bed each night:
I've done my best in serving you today, Lord.
Now I'm going to bed.
It's your world - take care of it!
Please, help us, Lord!
Help us do the best we can in serving you each day,
especially in these days when needs are so great, Lord,
when compassion, understanding, gentleness and mercy
are so much in need...
Help us change the things we can
and accept the things we can't
- and give us wisdom to recognize the difference...
Help us put our worries, fears and anxieties
in your hands, Lord, trusting:
that you will change what we can't change,
that you'll be there in good times and bad,
that you will find us when we are lost,
that you'll be our strength when we're tired and weak,,
and that in the end, all shall be well
and if all is not yet well,
it's simply not the end...
Take from our hearts our worries and fears
and fill us with deep peace, Lord,
fill us with your peace...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
