In his nightly address, President Volodymyr Zelensky noted the coming Eastern Orthodox Easter weekend, saying that Good Friday was “one of the most sorrowful days of the year” for Christians. (Zelensky is Jewish.) Good Friday, Zelensky said, is a “day when death seems to have won," but, he added, "We hope for a resurrection.”
It's Holy Saturday in Ukraine, Lord,
where the people mourn your death on the Cross
and the loss of their sons and daughters
in a tragic and senseless war...
Innocence is crucified, once again,
by the sins of those who fail to follow
the path of your Word and your law...
At the foot of this cross there stands a man,
like the Roman centurion long ago:
not a disciple, not a believer,
but one who knows and faithfully follows:
the path of truth,
the word of justice,
and the law of love
you've inscribed upon every heart...
Even Volodymyr hopes for a resurrection, Lord:
for death to be vanquished and life to triumph
in a harvest of justice and a victory for peace...
Do not disappoint us, Lord,
but rise up once again, we pray,
to save your people and set them free
to live in the peace
you've won for us all...
Amen.
Thank you for the lovely prayer (and pynsanka) for Ukraine. I have a distant cousin in Ssouthern Ukraine that hasn't seen the horror north of him. I truly enjoy your daily inspiring words.
