Just this afternoon, Lord,
on Sumner Road in Cambridge,
just outside of Harvard Square:
I breathed, inhaled and reveled in
my first real whiff of spring!
You, my saving sommelier,
uncorked this longed-for season
and poured a glass of springtime
to quench my thirst for joy...
I lifted it to eye it's pure, pale light
and savor it's bouquet:
heady with vernal spirits;
oaked the way I favor chardonnay;
complex with hints of rain-moist earth,
woodsy mulch and dogwood on the bloom...
My soul craves spring's fresh scent, Lord,
I'm thirsting for its promise,
poured out to fill my heart
with the intoxicating promise
of your Spirit and your grace...
For this afternoon's sweet joy, Lord,
I give you thanks and praise
and pray this be a vintage year
for all that spring will bring...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
