NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 5/1

On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on the scene in today's gospel where the risen Jesus appears to his friends and cooks breakfast for them on the shore: holy brunch! Tonight's song is a favorite of many, "Lord, You Have Come to the Seashore."  The verse that always stops me in my tracks is this:

Lord, as I drift on the waters,
be the resting place of my restless heart,
my life’s companion, my friend and refuge.

Restless... that's a good description, Lord!

I sometimes feel restless:
unsettled, not at ease, anxious
- but restless really says it best:
restless in my thoughts and feelings,
restless in my drives and dreams,
restless in my heart and soul,
        restless in my prayer...

        Restless when I'm all alone,
restless when I'm in a crowd,
restless in the world around me,
restless right in my own skin...

        Restless over what's long gone,
restless for what's yet to be,
restless in my search for truth,
restless in my faith, my doubt...

        Restless in your presence, Lord
restless when it seems you're gone,
        restless with your Spirit's urging,
restless with your gift of grace...

As this day ends I pray then, Lord
for peace of mind and heart,
    for serenity,  tranquility,
    a calming of my soul
and a healing stillness deep within
where I might find you, waiting,
to steady and to settle me,
to be a place of rest
    from my ever restless heart...

Protect me, Lord, as I lie awake
and watch over me when I fall asleep
that awake, I might keep peaceful watch with you
and asleep, rest safely in your peace...

Amen.

Lord, you have come to the seashore,
neither searching for the rich nor the wise,
desiring only that I should follow.

O, Lord, with your eyes set upon me,
gently smiling, you have spoken my name;
all I longed for I have found by the water,
at your side, I will seek other shores.

Lord, see my goods, my possessions;
in my boat you find no power, no wealth.
Will you accept, then, my nets and labour?

Lord, take my hands and direct them.
Help me spend myself in seeking the lost,
returning love for the love you gave me.

Lord, as I drift on the waters,
be the resting place of my restless heart,
my life’s companion, my friend and refuge.
