I had lunch today with an old friend,
someone I haven't connected with
for years and years and years
- and maybe even longer than that!
What a joy!
What a blessing!
What a fool I've been
(what fools we've been)
to have let all this time go by!
But I'm grateful now for our reconnecting,
for finding again the thread that connects
and the trust to share from the heart
those gifts that only come to life
when opened and shared with others...
All this time apart, Lord,
- who knows what might have been?
But not to worry - today was the day
for rejoicing in grace, enjoying the peace,
of knowing again the gift of having a friend...
May this be the first of many such days
- and one more thing I pray:
open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
to gifts I've lost or forgotten
and let me not lose them again...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
Tonight's song isn't biblical or liturgical - it's Elton John -
who has some fine things to sing about friendship...

I hope the day will be a lighter highway
For friends are found on every road
Can you ever think of any better way
For the lost and weary travelers to go
Making friends for the world to see
Let the people know you got what you need
With a friend at hand you will see the light
If your friends are there then everything's all right
It seems to me a crime that we should age
These fragile times should never slip us by
A time you never can or shall erase
As friends together watch their childhood fly
Making friends for the world to see
Let the people know you got what you need
With a friend at hand you will see the light
If your friends are there then everything's all right
For friends are found on every road
Can you ever think of any better way
For the lost and weary travelers to go
Making friends for the world to see
Let the people know you got what you need
With a friend at hand you will see the light
If your friends are there then everything's all right
It seems to me a crime that we should age
These fragile times should never slip us by
A time you never can or shall erase
As friends together watch their childhood fly
Making friends for the world to see
Let the people know you got what you need
With a friend at hand you will see the light
If your friends are there then everything's all right
