NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday 7/12

In the beginning,
there were no alarm clocks,
    neither analog nor digital...

In the beginning,
we had no need for ringing, beeping, buzzing clocks:
brother sun was there to wake us
and to light the day, our comings and our goings,
'til sister moon pulled down night's shades
and by the starlight, rocked us 'til we slept...

In the beginning, Lord,it was all so simple:
with galactic artistry you shaped the Milky Way,
        our Solar System's home;
you set the sun, moon and planets in their place,
        first rouse us from our sleep, then to give us time for rest;
you separated night from day with two celestial orbs:
one to rule the day and one to rule the night...

You've also let us find a way
to make the night near bright as day,
to mute midday in midnight shades
but let us not stray far, O Lord,
    from heaven's lights and ways
living every day you've made for us
'til night falls and we sleep...

Let us dance the ancient rhythms, Lord,
    as simple as they are
as we make our way from day to day
    and finally home to you...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Brother sun, sister moon
Sister stars shine day and night
See them shine beautiful, radiant
Splendor of light

Brother sun and sister moon
Heaven and earth proclaim God's glory
All praise be Yours, Most High God

Brother wind and brother air
Fair and storm, all weather's moods
Colored flowers and healing herbs
Heavenly grace flows through you

Brother sun and sister moon
Heaven and earth proclaim God's glory
All praise be Yours, Most High God

So rejoice
For the heavens and earth
Are full of God's glory

(Interlude)

So rejoice
For the heavens and earth
Are full of God's glory

Brother sun and sister moon
