NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday 10/18

I wrote this prayer 8 years ago and from time to time
I've expanded it: here's the latest edition...

To sit in the dark
   and hope that you're there:
      this is prayer...

To dwell in the stillness,
   and ponder your mystery:
      this is prayer...

To inhale and exhale
    your peace in my breath:
       this is prayer...

To remember my past
    with pain and with sadness:
      this is prayer...

To worry and fret
    over those whom I love:
        this is prayer...

To feel in my heartbeat
    the pulse of your presence:
      this is prayer...

To weep without ceasing
    in grief over loss:
        this is prayer...

To search for the truth,
    for solutions and answers:
        this is prayer...

To hold in or cry out
    my anger and sorrow:
        this is prayer...

To wonder, to ask,
    if you listen to me:
        this is prayer...

To wait, all night long,
for a sign of your presence:
        this is prayer...

To remember my sins
    and still hope for mercy:
        this is prayer...

To close my eyes to the world around
and open my heart to you within:
      this is prayer...

To gaze on your Cross,
  overcome by your love:
      this is prayer...

To open my heart
   to make room for you:
      this is prayer...

To sit in the silence
    and know you are near:
      this is prayer...

To hide 'neath the covers
like a child in the night:
        this is prayer...

To open my hands
and hope that you'll fill them:
      this is prayer...

To mumble, humbly,
what my soul longs to speak:
      this is prayer...

To speak not a word
   and sit in the silence:
      this is prayer...

To trust that silence
   is a language you speak:
      this is prayer...

To hear in the quiet
  your whisper of grace:
      this is prayer...

To open my lips
   and say only, Jesus
this is prayer, Lord,
    this is prayer...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
