12 Days of Night Prayer for Christmas

 

When do the Twelve Days of Christmas begin? Today! 

The FIRST of this December dozen is - Christmas Day itself!  

The following 11 days of Christmas bring us to TWELFTH NIGHT, 

or the eve of Epiphany which is January 6. 

 

Beginning this evening and until the eve of Epiphany, 

Night Prayer will focus each day 

on one of the many gifts we have received from God.  

- BUT -

in my rendering of the 12 days you won't find

partridges, pear trees or 5 gold rings.

In stead,

you'll find gifts we'll all find helpful

in making our way into a NEW YEAR! 

Tonight; the gift of a Child, 

born to save us from... what?

 

On the first day of Christmas,

the good Lord gave to me

    a Child born in Bethlehem town...

 

You gave us a child, O God, 

your Child, your Son,

    our Lord and Savior,

    Brother and Redeemer,

    Friend and Companion,

    our Way, our Truth and our Light...

 

You gave us your Son, O God, to save us:

    to redeem us from our selfish pride,

    to deliver us from anxiety and fear,

    to light the way in our clouds and darkness,

    to be the truth in our doubt and confusion 

    and the path to follow when we can't find our way...

 

You gave us your only Child, O God,

born in Bethlehem town, your cherished and beloved:

    one with you in every way,

    one with us in all but sin     

    one with us that we be one with you...

 

On this first day of Christmas, Lord,

you gave us a Child, your Son born for us,

a gift without equal, beyond all compare,

a gift forever, your gift of peace,

making our peace, at last, with you...

 

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake

and watch over us while we sleep

that awake, we might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...

The people that walk in darkness

    have seen, have seen a great light.
And on those who dwell in endless gloom, 

    a light has shone.

 

For a Child is born this day: Rejoice, rejoice.
Daughter of Zion, awake. The glory of God is born.

And they shall name Him counselor, 

    shall call Him mighty God.
And He shall rule from age to age: 

    Prince of Peace.

Darkness covers the earth; 

    thick clouds govern its people.
But the Lord will bring them light; 

    the Lord will bring them light.
