NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 1/26

An introduction to this evening's prayer...

Having visited often in Georgetown, Colorado, I now have some ministry contacts.  This has led to my celebrating mass in the local parish on Saturday evenings while here and the opportunity to be part of a Wednesday night prayer group with inmates at the Clear Creek County Jail.  The inmates here are incarcerated for anywhere from several months to several years while awaiting trial or sentencing. Their openness, honesty and spiritual transparency is truly God's grace in action in the lives of his people.  It's a grace and a privilege for me to share in this with them.

Because that was my experience last night, I'm sharing a prayer I wrote about a dozen years ago when I was doing part time ministry in another county jail, in Middleton, Massachusetts. In different ways, we're all incarcerated by our circumstances, relationships, addictions, character defects, bad habits, anxieties and fears - so we all have reason and need to pray for freedom in our hearts...

A Prayer For Freedom In My Heart

Give me freedom in my heart, Lord,
when I'm feeling all locked up...

Give me freedom in my heart
when I'm walled in by my loneliness...

Give me freedom in my heart
when I'm imprisoned by my past...

Give me freedom in my heart
when anxious feelings jail my hope...

Give me freedom in my heart
when bars of fear lock down my soul...

Give me freedom in my heart
when I feel sentenced to a day, to a night,
a season that has no end...

Give me freedom in my heart
when I've locked myself in
and  hold the key in my own pocket...

Give me freedom in my heart
to hear your word of pardon,
of mercy and forgiveness...

Give me freedom in my heart, Lord,
to become, at last,
the person you created me to be...

Receive my thanks and praise
for all the freedom that is mine, Lord,
the freedom that I long for
and find in you alone...

Amen.

Freedom Hymn by Austin French
    cover by Joshua David

This is the best version of Freedom Hymn that I found on line.  Joshua David does a little pitch for his work at the end - but his contribution to our prayer is well worth it!

I push, I pull
Go back and forth finding myself pounding on a locked door
I try to make it out alone without your help
But I know I'll never win this war
I can never be, never be, free without you
I can never be, never be, me without you
This is the sound of chains breaking
This is the beat of a heart changing
This is a song of a soul forgiven
This is my freedom hymn
This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn
This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn
I breathe the air of freedom in knowing my life
Is better off in Your hands
The past is gone, what's done is done
Now I'm alive
And I'm never gonna look back
I can never be, never be, free without you
I can never be, never be, me without you
This is the sound of chains breaking
This is the beat of a heart changing
This is a song of a soul forgiven
This is my freedom hymn
This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn
This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn
Who the Son sets (free)
Is free indeed
Who the Son sets Is free indeed
Who the Son sets
Is free I'm free, oh
This is the sound of chains breaking
This is the beat of a heart changing
This is a song of a soul forgiven, oh
This is the sound of chains breaking
This is the beat of a heart changing
This is a song of a soul forgiven
This is my freedom hymn
This is my freedom hymn (my freedom hymn),
my freedom hymn (my freedom hymn)
This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn, ooh
